First-Ever Nationwide Pro-Marijuana TV Ad Campaign Is Launched in Conjunction with ‘4/20′

source

Boulder, Colorado: I have every reason to believe that ‘4/20′ in 2009 will be the biggest and most momentous one to date as NORML launches 7,770 nationwide TV ads that advocate for cannabis law reform; NORML expects record numbers of supporters to join the organization for the celebratory one-day price of $4.20 because, I believe, there is a palpable zeitgeist in America right now favoring reform; the Obama administration appears amenable to some cannabis law reforms in ways that no prior president since Jimmy Carter has embraced; and lastly, with NORML’s nearly 600,000 ‘friends’ on Facebook and nearly 67,000 MySpace, more Americans than ever before who are keen on cannabis can create a viral effect that benefits reform.

Here in Boulder between 10,000-15,000 students and activists are expected to celebrate in what has become the biggest 4/20 event in the world.

Heck, the New York Times has already posted a profile of 4/20 for today’s paper, where they came yesterday for interview and photos to the University of Colorado at Boulder’s National Marijuana Forum. This portends well to what will be an insane day in the media for pro-reform groups like NORML (I’ve already got 35 interviews scheduled…) as I was also asked to pen an essay for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered that I assume will be published today. (UPDATE! Read and comment on Allen’s essay here.)

I dare say we as a country are finally ‘getting it’ regarding the clear and obvious need to reform our misguided cannabis laws.

Thanks to the hundreds of NORML supporters who donated what they could to buy ad time to launch a timely 4/20 ad campaign, you’re the green that keeps NORML all grassroots, all of the time!

Rod Blagojevich scandal. 10 reasons why the Rod Blagojevich scandal could damage Barack Obama

Rod Blagojevich scandal.

Political corruption stories don’t get any better than the one that erupted today about the alleged machinations of Governor Rod Blagojevich of Illinois. The quotation-filled 76-page complaint - put your slippers on, make yourself a cup of cocoa and take the time to read the whole thing - reads like a gripping if slightly outlandish film plot.

Obamaland will make much of prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald’s statement that “we make no allegations that he [Barack Obama] was aware of anything”. But this could turn out to be very bad news for the president-elect. Here’s why:

1. Senate Candidate 5 could be Emil Jones, as Ben Smith outlines here. If what the complaint outlines is true then Senate Candidate 5 could well end up in jail. Jones, current chairman of the Illinois state senate, was Obama’s political godfather in Springfield - the man who set him on the path to the presidency.

2. Senate Candidate 5 could be Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr, as Marc Ambinder outlines here. Jackson was a key member of Obama’s campaign and is very closely aligned with him. On the merits, he was probably the best candidate to get the Senate seat. My reading of the complaint is that it is more likely to be Jones but Jackson is certainly in the frame.

3. The taint of Chicago. Obama largely escaped this during the campaign but the scale of the Blagojevich scheme was so huge and elaborate that there will be no dodging it now. Obama achieved statewide office in Illinois. After reading the Blagojevich complaint, it is difficult to understand how anyone could do this without getting their hands dirty.

4. Howard Baker’s old Watergate question will be applied to Obama. What did he know and when did he know it? Obama’s extremely careful statement this afternoon indicates that he realises he’s tiptoeing across a minefield. It’s hard to believe he was totally clueless about the whole thing.

5. Valerie Jarrett. Part of Obama’s inner circle, she’s Senate Candidate 1 - the person Blagojevich believed he could put into the Senate and get the post of Health Secretary in return. Blagojevich was delusional, of course. Jarrett withdrew herself from consideration for the seat. Was this because she found out what was going on?

6. A special election for the Senate seat seems a very likely possibility. This will keep Illinois corruption in the limelight and could very well deliver the seat to a Republican - and prevent an ally like Jesse Jackson Jr being elevated.

7. Tony Rezko. Remember him? He hasn’t gone away, you know. He’s right there in the complaint.

8. In the public mind, corruption moves from being the principal preserve of Republicans - Randy “Duke” Cunningham, Ted Stevens, Jack Abramoff, Bob Ney - to being a cross-party or even mainly democratic phenomenon.

9. Did Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s chief of staff, tip off the feds about Blagojevich? If so, that is of course commendable. But, again, it brings the issue right to the president-elect’s door.

10. Although Obama has distanced himself from Blagojevich as of late, as Jake Tapper points out, that wasn’t always the case: “Mr. Obama has a relationship with Mr. Blagojevich, having not only endorsed Blagojevich in 2002 and 2006, but having served as a top adviser to the Illinois governor in his first 2002 run for the state house.”

This one will run and run.

Apologies for the long silence. I’m now back in the saddle after my two-week break, during which time I moved  from DC to just beyond what John McCain’s brother called “communist country”.

Barack Obama plan could boost U.S. Solar Energy development: Gartner

Stamford, Conn. - As president, Barack Obama could usher in a new era of solar energy development in the United States, but he will face economic difficulties that might be a barrier to more expensive renewable initiatives, according to a research director at Gartner, Inc.

James Hines, a lead Gartner analyst on solar energy technologies, said the U.S. has the potential to overtake Germany as the largest photovoltaic market within a few years.

However, he noted that demand for solar energy remains dependent on government subsidies because it costs more than conventional forms of electric-power generation. The new U.S. administration could help encourage investment in solar energy projects if it succeeds in implementing some of its plans, which is more likely with the Democrats’ expanded majorities in both houses of Congress.

This increased emphasis on renewable energy and the extension of the 30 percent investment tax credit for solar projects, which passed last month, could finally help realize the nation’s “vast potential for solar energy,” he added.

According to Hines, President-elect Obama’s alternative energy plan, called New Energy for America, could have a significant impact on the U.S. solar industry. The plan’s provisions include:

* A federal renewable portfolio standard (RPS) that requires 10 percent of electricity consumed in the U.S. to come from renewable sources by 2012.
* A $150 billion investment over 10 years in research, technology demonstration, and commercial deployment of clean energy technology.
* Extension of production tax credits for five years to encourage renewable energy production.
* A cap-and-trade system of carbon credits to provide an incentive for businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Economic snags
There are potential barriers to New Energy for America, Hines noted. The new presidential administration will face a difficult economic situation that could curtail the plan, and expensive government programs will be hard to enact as a recessionary economy cuts into tax receipts.

“It is likely that the RPS will be passed during 2009, which will provide a strong boost to U.S. demand for solar energy,” Hines predicted. “The other provisions, which require significant spending or tax incentives, might have to wait until the economy starts to recover.”
